In this article, I will talk about 3 things using which you can build any new habit effectively. I have personally used these methods to build a lot of good habits.

This content will be helpful for all those people who want to build new good habits but because of lack of time can’t do it.

After reading this, you will have a framework which will help you develop a new habit no matter how busy you are in life at the moment.

Coming from a very simple lower-middle-class family where people have only one life goal which is to earn money, I have understood the importance of mental health, financial freedom, and physical health. One thing about which I never complain is lack of time and that’s because subconsciously I am following the framework discussed here for a very long time.

  1. Start small and over time build on it: This is one of the key things to keep you consistent in the initial days. During the habit-building phase, showing up daily is more important than actually achieving something out of it. Once you master the art of showing up daily, the outcome of your habit is taken care of automatically. So whenever you start with a new habit don’t be in rush to achieve the results, just believe that you will get the results in some time, and also don’t define that “some time” in the beginning.
  2. Fitting a new habit in between established habits: This approach worked well for me over time and again. Suppose you already have established habits of meditating and reading. Now, you want to develop the habit of writing. You can easily fit your writing habit in between your meditating and reading habits. The only condition is that you should have some extra time available in your day. So, suppose your work hour is between 10 am to 6 pm, you can move that to 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, and this way you can get that extra 30 mins in the morning. Some people can also change their sleep time like instead of 10:00 pm to 5:00 am, they can now switch to 10:30 pm to 5:30 am sleep time and this way they get some extra time late evening.
  3. Don’t worry if you miss a day or two in between: This is also very important. When people start with a new habit and they miss a day or two, they give up. They start procrastinating in a hope that one fine day they will start again. This approach doesn’t work. It’s okay if you miss a day or two in between for whatever reasons but you should show up as soon as possible without having any guilt feeling of missed day. In the long run that missed day will have very less impact on your overall goal.

For beginners, above mentioned practices themselves will help to build any new habit but if one wants to go deeper he/she can always refer to the book Atomic habit by James Clear. At last, remember showing up daily is very important, so don’t procrastinate things for weekends.

I write more such life lessons based on my experience on Twitter.
